Balaam instructs Balak (king of Moab to build seven altars. Balak thinks he is going to curse Jacob and Israel. Instead – Balaam blesses them.
This whole process is repeated a second and 3rd time.
Balak has enough and tries to send Balaam on his way – but not before Balaam exclaims the curse of God on the Moabites and other peoples. He declares Israel and Jacob will be victorious.
V23 – “who can live except God has ordained it.”
Numbers 25
Israel is in Shittim.
They befriend the Moabites and worship Baal of Peor with the Moabites. God instructs Moses to call out all the leaders and execute them in broad daylight. 24,000 were killed – it ended when Phinehas killed son of Israel who brought in a Midianite woman. Spear went through both of them at one time.
- The man was Zimri – son of Salu – Simeonite.
- The woman was Cozbi – daughter of Zur – a Midianite.
Phinehas – “he was jealous with the jealousy of God.” Therefore God ended the plague.
