The dedication of the 1st born the 1st offspring of every female (beast and human) was to be dedicated to God every year as a remembrance for what God had done for them. (Remember the plague of death of the first born had just occurred.)
SUBSTITUTIONARY REDEMPTION - The 1st born of the donkey was considered unclean – so a lamb was used as its substitution. If a lamb was not substituted, then the donkey’s neck was to be broken.
The 1st born of the beasts were sacrificed, but the first born of people were redeemed by those sacrifices.
God led them by cloud in the day and by fire at night.
He bypassed the land of the Philistines – because he didn’t want the people to change their minds when they saw war – therefore they went through the wilderness to the Red Sea.
Moses took Joseph’s bones with them.
