Jacob (Israel) blesses Joseph’s sons Ephraim and Manasseh. He gives Ephraim the greater blessing even though he is the youngest.
Genesis 49
Jacob blesses his own sons (heads of the 12 tribes):
- Reuben-forfeited his place of preeminence because of fornication (35:22)
- Simeon and Levi – condemned because of their anger
- Judah – would be the leader
- Zebulun – “Haven for ships”
- Dan – judge
- Isaachar – slave
- Gad – Raider
- Asher – “royal dainties” (food)
- Naphtali – beautiful words
- Joseph – distinguished among his brothers
- Benjamin – ravenous wolf
Jacob dies.
Genesis 50
Joseph and his brothers leave Goshen to bury Jacob in Canaan.
After Jacob dies Joseph’s brothers fear he will take revenge on them for what they had done to him. Joseph assures them he will care for them.
Joseph dies and as he does he urges his brothers to keep the covenants with God.
Joseph is buried in Egypt.
