IN THE MEANTIME (remember Moses was on the mountain 40 days/nights) - ch 24
Aaron - the very one that God was talking with Moses about being His priest - built a golden calf (idol) for the people at their request.
Aaron set the golden calf before the people and said "this is your god who brought you out of the land of Egypt."
God wanted to destroy the people, but He was still going to hold to His promise to Moses and make him a great nation - He was willing to start all over (v 10)
Moses talked God out of destroying the people (v 14) - the Lord changed His mind.
When Moses saw what the people had done - he shattered the two stones that God had written with His own hands.
He burned the calf and scattered it over the water and made the people drink it.
Moses saw the people were out of control - he went to the gate of the camp and said "Whoever is for the Lord, come to me!" (v 26) The sons of Levi came.
Moses instructed the Levites to kill other Israelites because of their sin. They killed 3000 men that day.
Nevertheless God continued to lead the people with His angel. "carry on" - I will smite those who have sinned against Me.
